CDR reissue of a reel my friend jay and I found, made 50 copies and spreading it around, its straight forward, "american-primitive" styled guitar stuff, from Bernadston, MA 1978 was what the reel was labelled. 5.00 should do it just to cover cover/postage/packing crystallineroses@gmail.com if you're interested. Consequently, if you have any info on the man shoot me a line as well...

I will also be spreading around some extra copies ("2nd Press") of the Crystalline Roses Transcendence CDR in the New Year, it was a compilation of songs/demos/instrumentals/outtakes from 2010-11 so it seems fitting to release it in 2012.

VDSQ record is in its final stages, finally after totally spacing on cutting it down to a proper mix, its slated for a spring release...

Frozen Corn in some form or another is playing at sierra grille, although it may be just Chris and I, but the gig is with Rubber Leather, so you should go regardless... I would say like 8-9ish, but I always hope for that.

No future performances are planned as of now, the finishing touches are being put on the VDSQ LP, and I am working on a CDR re-issue of a reel a friend and I found, nothing serious just about 50 copies of this instrumental guitarist, its actually pretty interesting... But more on that when it is complete.

I also would like to take this moment to say you should buy the Bunwinkies LP Map of Our Constellations, it is everything you could want, I guarantee it, and I urge you to go pick up a copy. And while you are buying things pick up the Supreme Dicks reissues, they sound incredible and it is nice to listen to these as big platters... 14.oo for a double LP, you cant go wrong...

August 6th am playing a benefit to Save the Dam, for the Swift River Preservation Society, and a duel cause for Tornado Relief, right on the Swift out in Ware. No clue about time yet, or who else is playing...

Recording a new full length with zac and ian heading back to the studio Thursday to do some bass, extra guitars/instruments, and singing. As yet unnamed... The Crystalline Roses/Heaven and Earth Magic lineup, with Ian hitting some drums for us. So far we have 10 songs, that are the bare bones pallets over there at Chill Air studios in Leverett with Chill Will... Frozen Corn stuff has also been mixed down to a first mix... and the Instrumental is tentatively done, thanks to Kevin Gebo...

New CDR of Demos is out, collected from recordings at my house in the fall, winter, and even some outtakes from the instrumental LP i have been working on. That LP is done being recorded, I am currently tracking it out, then a bit of mixing/reduction, then its all set. Going to play some gigs in early August that are being worked out for that label. http://www.vdsqrecords.com to check out the series. Also a gig being set up for the end of July in support of my friends band Stoned Ambassadors LP release, its a great sounding recording done by the master of all recordings, Mr. Will Killingsworth. Really psyched its going to hit the light of day, buy it up. I will be breaking briefly from recording CR stuff unless we squeeze in the "Two Man Cult" recording sesh with Mr. WK himself... If that happens there will be a new LP on the rise. Frozen Corn is working on recording but Mr. C Carlt is across the country for a wee bit. Also some other new projects are abound unrelated to this one... Should be an interesting summer to say the least...

Last but not least Gluebag is playing July 3rd at an undisclosed location. Yes we are going to play again to celebrate D-moneys return to the east coast...

Hello got some up coming gigs here... And some news down below...

Frozen Corn are playing our first show, me, josh and chris playing some old time/folk tunes. Its Thursday (5/12) at Open Mouth night at the Elevens. Shows usually get going around 10. Going to be a late night for me...

One Happy King/Goat Boy/THE Crystalline Roses/The Terribles. 8ish down at the Diamond Lanes in Palmer, MA. Not sure how much it costs or anything, but Zac is back from NC and has agreed to bring the organ and some other instruments so it should be fun. And if you go you can pick up a One Happy Tape off of one of the Kings.

Gluebag are in talks for a reunion gig July 2nd with the Outdates and One Happy King hopefully. More info as it filters in from across the states where the other guys are sprawled out and across western mass as we confirm bands and a space.

I am in the thought process of a post recording CDR. It may be a split with Anthony P. (ex-The Yankee Entertainer) or it may be a collection of oddities, or it may be a comp of both. But one thing is sure expect a lot of banjos. After doing all this guitar stuff I need to get back to what I learned how to play music on. Show with MV EE/Family Underground, was alright, I was slightly terrified while playing due to the demons dancing in my head and my fingers getting crossed up apologies for that. MV EE played a pretty diverse set with John M and Ron S, groovers, trancers, laid back feedback, nice set and Family Underground were LOUD. Grab a copy of that new MV EE Country Stash LP.....

Going to try and get back into playing a couple shows. We'll see what happens. Was going to put this CDR out but I don't really know if I am going to just yet. Working on some new instrumentals for a record offer I couldnt pass up, hopefully some more details to come. Sometime in the next couple of months I will be finishing up the 7" that was supposed to be slated for Labor of Love (if they still want to do it) and recording the LP of that stuff. Also plan on recording a solo banjo record exploring tunings and styles of the 20s and certain field recordings of the 60s. Here are the dates for the gigs...

TWILIGHT PEAKS, ROBBIE BASHO

I have been listening a lot to Robbie Basho's Twilight Peaks album. It is one of his last efforts and it really radiates a soul that seems to reach out of the speakers. The playing is a little bit more melodious and less frantic than a lot of the earlier stuff, even when he is tremolo picking something about it seems to be moving on air. As much as I love Basho's earlier stuff and his unique voice, I find myself coming back to this album again and again. I think what is unique about it is the fact that sometimes even if I am not in the mood to listen to Robbie Basho I can always throw this album on.

I am bored and snowed in and sick of the TV, and the Lovecraft book I keep reading, I am at my folks house... Since I have the internet here, I figured I would try to upload my discography for this project while I have the internet... I am not very good at uploading things (basically I apologize if any of these dont work), but I got a hotfile account a while back to get some dead soundboards off of a great blog that now may or may not exist in secrecy...

Observational Chymistry Tape, was the first release for this project and where the name came from, its a song on this tape. Recorded the guitar and voice with Will at the old Dead Air, and the overdubs with Gebo. I did 25 tapes and 50 CDRs I think... The Download is a Side A/Side B thing, that is how Gebo and I mixed it in its finality, and I cant remember some of the song titles...

Electric Abstractions were some bedroom recordings I made of Loops and did monologues over them sometime. I used to do this a lot and this was a compilation of the ones I thought worked the best... Some of the monologues are passages from Lautréamont's Maldoror. It was a CDR I made a few copies and gave it to friends. I originally wrote the tracklisting to include the piece "begin" but crossed it off and left it off the CDR.

An EP named after a quote from On the Road, but written primarily as an ode to the secrets contained in the deepest parts of the ocean and possibilities of black holes and aliens. It is also inspired from a part of Maldoror, the part hailing the Old Ocean. /50 CDRs
Ripples

This was an instrumental CDR that I made about 50 copies of or so, it came with a full color print of a painting I made. It was recorded sitting on my porch, my friend was sleeping in the other room for the majority of the 12 string recordings, I was kind of zonked and had a tape recorder going for some reason, then I recorded some banjo and some other six string guitar. I think the whole thing was more or less improvised. I also included a tape I made about 15 copies of called Chemosynthesis, this long song eventually became the songs of the morning star I believe. Chemosynthesis is the process by which the deepest plants in the ocean are able to survive.

These were recorded in Hadley in the summer or something I also recorded a bunch of demos, it was directly to the hand-held recorder I used for the C.R. disc. Justin Pigott put this out and it features him as well as legendary Dane Peter Bonneman. Peter's stuff is so good, Justin's as well, they are two of my favorite humans. My stuff is two written songs, an improvised minor song and a Charles Manson cover.
3 Way split

One Man Cult, this existed in two different horrendous versions, that I hope no one ever hears. The final product came after I recorded another batch of songs/improvisations while being snowed in in Hadley. Then I could replace some of the old stuff, then Ted and I went back and forth, eventually getting this out... The themes on this vary greatly from song to song, and the whole thing sort of describes the Cult of my own mind. I think it could be a lot better, but I am usually unsatisfied with my stuff. I think some of the stuff seems forced or something. It is still available (/250) if you dont have the record.

A BIG THANKS TO MYSTERY TRAIN RECORDS!! Mystery Train Records has put out a Christmas Comp of sorts, I have a song on it, its a version of Lil McClintock's Please Dont Think Im Santa Claus. He recorded it with guitar and voice, I did slightly edit it by recording it with my nylon string banjo, but tried to keep the spirit of the tune alive... An interesting piece nonetheless it is actually about 3 songs in one, The Santa verse, Lindy Lou On the Watermelon Vine, and the verses about work. I remember reading about it in the book Songsters and Saints Vocal Traditions on Race Records but cant remember exactly what they said about it, I lent that book to my friend Phil and he gave me a different book back. The book is amazing, it weaves in and out of a lot of vaudville, blues, and raggy kinds of songs "Race Records." A lot of the more bizarre/rarer songs that were recorded. The first time I heard this song was on The Music of the Medicine Shows compilation, one of my favorite releases of Old Time music, because you really get the whole spectrum, Gid Tanner, Uncle Dave, Tar Heels but then you get the Frank Stokes, Shorty Godwin, Lil McClintocks... So that was a lot of rambling, apologies but if you care to follow up...

Ted (feedingtube) put out a live tape, and put a song of mine on it, also on the tape are Astral Plane Junkies, Major Stars, Grey Skull, BenGeorge7, and Elaine Kahn... The song is off an Old EP called "Ripples in the Upsidedown Lake of the Void," which is actually a random line in "On the Road," had never noticed it before but it was really prominent in this book on tape version I was listening to, but even less relevant was that that EP specifically was made because of a chapter on the ocean in Leautremont's "Maldoror." Whats weird is I remember playing the song that night, and it kind of came out of no where, had not played or even thought about it in a long time. Its called "The Sun." Pointless rant I guess except to plug an old book...

Anyways might have a new tape out soon of a live set from a night a bit ago at a wonderous location of freedom that no longer exists anymore... More on that to come. The two electric songs remain unmixed...

Its The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts benefit show The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts works with our community to reduce hunger and increase food security. The Food Bank works behind the scenes of nearly every charitable organization that helps to provide food to people in need in western Massachusetts. Our 400 member agency programs include soup kitchens,food pantries, homeless shelters,childcare centers,and elder programs throughout Berkshire,Franklin,Hampden, and Hampshire counties. Each year the Food Bank distributes more than 6 million pounds of food to these agencies to help feed people in need. The Food Bank is one of more than 200 certified food banks that are affiliated with Feeding America, a national network of food banks and food rescue programs.

Also on Saturday (10.23.10) people should go see Bobb Trimble in Palmer, hes playing a set one of three he has booked for the year. The support is Josh Burkett, and Sunburned as well, a great night of musics.

Maybe because the last time I updated this was in June. So if anyone reads this this is the happs as of late... to be honest, not a whole lot has been going on, for most of the summer gigs I was playing a lot of old time gigs, trying to keep things fresh for myself, and people that watch and I had not been writing that much material... Saw a lot of good people this summer, and bummed around, saw some good music. Ted opened a record store aptly titled Feeding Tube Records in Northampton, and I would recommend checking it out. I am writing for some new stuff, and have a new 45 with a drummer (Ian), and electric instruments (So far bass 12 and 6 strings)... There may be another 45 of this stuff to come out as well...

Also I moved. The LP is still in print, I have some but I keep spacing on bringing them anywhere...

One Man Cult artwork has been scanned and the test presses are anxiously being awaited, hopefully they sound great and we can get the wheels really moving. I will be photocopying the 11x15 posters and insert cards soon as well. This week shall be extremely busy.

Secondly if you came to either the Mystery Train show, or the brief Florence set thanks a lot, I felt a little more anxious and out of sorts than usual and appreciate you baring with me. As far as the mystery train show goes thanks to Josh for asking me to play, and to Conrad and Jow Jow for their interstellar domination.

I am going to start writing material for a new release and Zac and I are talking of actually recording our record with our friend Jaybo playing drums..... Will it happen who knows?

Glenn Jones has had his most recent record come out, its his first 12 inch, and it is absolutely stunning. The compositions are phenomenal, and he really puts his own tinge on the solo guitar. I think this is his best release so far and that is saying a lot. I would also like to add that I am taking part in the "Wild Wild West cassette tape comp" being put out by Galambis Records, and have also made a limited cover for the pre order copies. It is an ode to Burnt Hill in Heath, MA and one of its most famous ponderers. The song is taken from CT show of the tour with Justin Pigott and Peter Bonneman this summer, it is a version of "Crystalline Roses" off of the Observational Chymystry tape. The version features Zac on Flute and our friend Danny Gardella on both floor percussion and fiddle.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I am currently at a stand still with writing for this musical project. I have been off in another sea altogether as of late, and have let some other projects come to the front for a while. I will try to keep updating this blog with various goings on relating to CR and the circles that encompass the project. I have been reading and making lots of drawings, and writing/working on some other musical projects and most importantly trying to balance teaching and life...

SQRM has a couple gigs coming up, 10/24 we are part of a two day noise fest at the eleven and we will be doing a special set featuring the legendary chris dooley on guitar/tapes/electronics (More info at the bottom of this message).

We have another show 11/6 with Iron Lung, Mind Eraser and Dry Hump in Boston.

I am going to be doing a special CR show for a friends record release, more info on that to come...

Four songs each from myself, Crystalline Roses and Peter Bonnemann. Two editions of fifty, screened covers in a gatefold, recycled with a booklet. I am also going to be releasing a radio show I did back in febuary. Four songs, three of mine and a Fahey cover, there is a few klankers but not bad overall. Im doing twenty in black paper covers with a psuedo obi. more to come. Both will be numbered.

I was added on to a bill at the Unitarian Church in Amherst, MA on June 5th playing with some friends and poets... Jazer Giles, Julia, Nathan H. and Myself, hoping to start around 7 I believe, more details as they come or just look for a poster...

The LP was also mixed by my friend Kevin Gebo, and will be mastered soon, and then off to the presses I believe.

I have been experimenting more with how I have been performing, so at these shows expect some different things, including my friend Zac playing with me sometimes as well.

Walker was born in Boston, MA in 1937, into a musical family, and began to play the guitar from an early age. He committed himself to touring and public performance from 1959 onwards, becoming a fixture of the Greenwich Village folk scene of the mid-'60s (during which period he became particularly close to Sandy Bull and Karen Dalton). Over the same period, Walker's attendance of a Ravi Shankar performance in San Francisco saw him embrace extended periods of study of Eastern raga under both Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan. Through mutual Boston associates Walker also developed a strong friendship with LSD pioneer Timothy Leary, becoming music director at Leary's Millbrook estate in 1965.

Walker's debut LP Rainy Day Raga was released by Vanguard Records in 1966, followed by the release of Second Poem in 1968. Walker diverted his attention away from public performance and towards family life at the start of the 1970s, but maintained a commitment to study of his instrument, focussing particularly upon Flamenco. In 2007 Walker was coaxed out of this semi-retirement by Joshua Rosenthal of Tompkins Square Records, for whom he recorded four new pieces to be set alongside musical tributes from younger admirers including Jack Rose, James Blackshaw, Steffen Basho-Junghans and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore on the 2008 collection A Raga for Peter Walker. A full album of new material, Echo of My Soul, was released by Tompkins Square later the same year. These releases were supported by extensive touring and live performance, sparking a renewed level of interest which culminated in a recorded session for Stuart Maconie on BBC 6 Music, and an extended interview on BBC Radio 4's flagship early morning current affairs show The Today Programme.

Shows were pretty fun and thanks to anyone who came out. I think Zac and I will spend some time in the studio and think about adding a full band because playing with Todd was too much fun, and our set in Pittsfield seemed to be lacking energy or flow or something, the place had a really lull state to it as well, so it was hard to get things circulating.

Other news, total sidetrack... I have gone to 2 of these Dead shows, and am going to a 3rd one tonight, they have been really great I suggest going over to archive.org and listening to one, my preferences have been night 2 in Worcester (4-19-09) and the Nassau show (4-24) Wilkes Barre is also a nice showing, and if this MSG one gets up there its a trip of a setlist... here are the setlists for the two I have seen...

Ripples in the Upside Down Lake of the Void.

Some texts just breeze past you, even when you are reading them. The title of this EP is actually a quote from "On the Road," Kerouac says something to the effect of the stars looked like ripples in the upside down lake of the void. This struck home with me because I interpreted it as the ocean being the upside down lake of the void, and the stars rippling through, the way lights reflect of the ocean when looking outward. It was the perfect title, for a concept based CDR that has to do with ones relationship and respect for the sea, and the inherent, ancient, and uninterpretable knowledge contained therein. A lot of the ideas for songwriting were informed by readings of Maldoror, and mainly what I believe is the 3rd part, where the Comte de Leatremont states everything in relation to Old Ocean. It is more of an ode or nod in my opinion. Here is a link to download the EP.

Thanks to my friend Michael Donahue for showing me this, Gumbri improv, distant cousin of our banjo. If you notice the stylings it is similar to earlier clawhammer, only not alternating rhythm on the top string, but using it to hit the head. With 3 strings, it seems to make more sense, now the reasoning behind the "earlier" tag is the up-picking and soft raking, that is seen more common in black banjo stylings and minstrel phrasing. beautiful. speechless...

Just got back to Earth from an other worldly rare adventure to cities and highways. A lot of fears were conquered, and friends were seen and made. Thanks to all involved. A lot of recording coming up, maybe even start today, the final parts of the LP, and also my songs for the split with Justin and Peter. It seems as though that project is coming together rather quickly.

I figured I would update while I have some internet quickly Baltimore show, my friend should be emailing me details as to what exactly is going on... I know that it is with Peer Pressure as a tour kick off and the date in question is Sunday February 15th...

Other goings on,
Recordings for the new CD of songs and Outtakes for the LP is complete, mixing on Tuesday... As soon as my finger heals up I will be recording a sessions worth of banjo pieces, then putting together a final mix of songs for that release. Also up and coming are a Split CD with my friend Justin Pigott and a friend of his named Peter, I will be recording all new material for this, I also may be doing a 7" with a friend of mine, and having a track on a compilation, which will also be all new stuff. I am also in process of a secretive project consultations in Magick and hippie protest songs with some friends that will be released under a different name.

Soon, either before or after I get back, I will put up some full out of print albums for download on here via mediafire or something of the sort.

So, after the knife incident, the shows have been a little harder, luckily everyone else is so good i can forget about my subpar performances, and think about how great it was to meet and play with so many amazing people. I am releasing a CD of mixed demos of pretty much everything that will be on the new LP, however I am going to record a bunch of new stuff on banjo for said LP and a cover song that will not be featured on the disc. Also I will be putting the tracks from the cassette tape originally released in an edition of 10, at the end of the CD. These will DEFINITELY be ready in time for Baltimore, it seems unrealistic for Friday, but could happen thank you for reading, and if you came and watched me play thanks a bunch, apologies if it was sloppy...

Rip. Ron Asheton. For those who did not know who this guy is/was, he was the guitarist for the Stooges. And if you dont like the Stooges, I guess I can say I feel bad for you....

Ron Asheton, guitarist and founding member of the Stooges, was reportedly found dead at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan this morning. He was 60. Official cause of death has not yet been announced but initial indications suggest Asheton had a heart attack. Police entered Asheton’s home and discovered his body on a couch after his personal assistant was unable to reach the rocker for days. Detective Bill Stanford told Michigan Live it appeared Asheton passed away several days ago.

As the guitarist for the Stooges, Asheton crafted some of rock’s most memorable riffs, including “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” “No Fun” and “TV Eye.” Guitarist Asheton, along with his brother Scott, Iggy Pop and original bassist Dave Alexander formed the Stooges in Detroit in 1967. The original lineup released two albums, The Stooges and Fun House, before Ron Asheton shifted over to bass guitar for 1973’s Raw Power. All three LPs made Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, ranking at Number 185, 191 and 125 respectively. Asheton was also Number 29 on Rolling Stone’s list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

After the Stooges initially split, Asheton went on to play with the New Order (not the U.K. one), Destroy All Monsters, New Race and the Wylde Ratttz, a supergroup featuring Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Mudhoney’s Mark Arm, Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis and Mike Watt, who would eventually become Asheton’s bandmate when the Stooges reunited in 2003. For the band’s comeback album, 2007’s The Weirdness, Asheton was once again in his rightful place onstage as the Stooges’ guitarist as Watt picked up bass duties. Last year the Stooges played as Madonna was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; this year, the band was nominated for their own induction. Check back later in the day for more on Asheton’s death and his immeasurable impact on rock music.

Lost, Lost...

nothing is at it seems, everything wears a mask, at least a veil.

upon re-listening to some of the recordings, vocals are gone, lyrics need to be rewritten.

I have been trashing a lot of stuff lately.

There is a show in the Works At the Microtheater in Pittsfield, MA, I am hoping to have Chemosynthesis ready, but it is looking doubtful. I may do another tape release of some kind for it.

Snowed Inside

Show the other night was great on all fronts, both people present and people performing. It brought forth the release of an edition of 10 hand painted/ink drawing covered tapes with demo versions of songs for the Chemosynthesis record. While I have been trapped I have been recording for the aforementioned release, so far I have about 6 songs done, that all could use a decent mixing. Today I will record at least one more, and rerecord this song of which I didn't really like the way it came out. Maybe I can even find out how to put some music up on this thing.

As I am typing this, the snow is back at it, in heavy doses, at least it is not the ice that plagued us a week back.

Rabbits Moon

I am working on a new album. It is entirely in variations of D tunings, and tentatively titled Chemosynthesis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemosynthesis if you dont know what it is you can read here. I have also been watching a lot of Kenneth Anger movies and it made me think of this lost song, words would never match up to anything, maybe they will fit in the new record.
